  Healthy Food System

ISA works to establish a safe, nutritious and local food system that sustains rural communities. ISA gets this done by encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, expanding market opportunities for farmers, and establishing local food policy councils. By working to open local and Chicago urban markets for Illinois farmers, we maximize freshness and nutrition, keep more revenue within the state, and reduce transportation costs. We also build local food systems through local food policy councils, which give local communities a voice in their food and farms. Food policy councils determine topics that are important to their areas, such as marketing, alternative production and funding. If you are interested in participating in monthly food policy calls, contact Patrick McGarry: <patrick@ilstewards.org >

Educating the Next Generation of Farmers

Working with Illinois Community Colleges, ISA is working to provide a curriculum for sustainable farming practices. Students and farmers are increasingly demanding education in environmentally sound and economically viable farming systems as well as transitioning to sustainable and organic practices. This training will help invigorate local food systems

  Livestock Initiative

Promoting livestock in Illinois is vital to our state's agriculture, and promoting family farm livestock operations is the way to do it. Research has shown that family farm livestock operations create jobs and increase rural economic growth while protecting our land, air and water. By promoting livestock on family farms, strengthening our transportation network, and increasing certified slaughtering facilities across the state, Illinois can become a leader in livestock production while creating economic development that benefits rural and urban communities.

  2007 Farm Bill

“The Food Bill” may be a better name for the Farm Bill, since it largely determines what food is produced across the country. ISA worked to influence key provisions in the 2007 Farm Bill, such as the Conservation Security Program, that affect the health of our agricultural economy as well as the health of our environment. The Conservation Security Program rewards farmers for conservation efforts on their farms, and helps farmers who are good stewards stay in business and continue to supply safe, nutritious food while protecting the environment.
