Urge the House Ag Committee to Support Local Food and Sustainable Agriculture in the 2018 Farm Bill: Deadline Sept. 8th

Members of the U.S. House Ag Committee are preparing to write the next Farm Bill and they just came to Decatur last week for one of only a few Listening Sessions across the country. We were thrilled that 25 people we invited attended the session, and 10 got the opportunity to testify in person!

Without these dedicated members and partners the House Ag Committee would have heard few to no testimonies addressing the needs of beginning farmers, organic farmers, and local food programs.

While we are proud of those who had the opportunity to speak, there is still work to do and we need many more voice speaking out for local food systems that feed our communities, keep soils healthy & waters clean, and protect family farms.

We need YOU.

The House Ag Committee is accepting written comments until Friday, September 8th, and YOUR TESTIMONY MATTERS.

Illinois Stewardship Alliance is collecting signatures and testimonies in support of our 4 main priorities for the 2018 Farm Bill:With three members of Congress from Illinois on the House Committee on Agriculture, folks in our state have a unique opportunity to shape the future of food and farming in this country.

  1. Build up local and regional food systems with support for farmers and consumers to access fresh, healthy, local food.
  2. Help new and beginning farmers access land, credit and training.
  3. Help family farmers access the best, most effective conservation strategies that enhance soil health and protect water.
  4. Reward farmers who use conservation practices with crop insurance premium support.

We are making a difference one farmer and one decision-maker at a time, but we are stronger and far more effective when we unite all of our voices and we work together as a community. The biggest asset we have, which wealthy powerful companies do not, is the voice of real people speaking up for the world they actually want to inhabit and not accepting the world that corporate PR departments and lobbyists try to sell us against our best interests. Please join our family and get involved.
