Alliance Creates Speaker Bureau of Sustainable Farming Experts

Springfield- Now organizations, event planners, and members of the media can use a comprehensive list of Illinois farmers to identify knowledgeable farmers with different areas of expertise who are able to speak publicly. This newly created Farmer Speaker Bureau aims to increase public knowledge and awareness about local food and sustainable farming.

There is often no better source for knowledge about conservation, local produce, and other agricultural topics than the people involved in day-to-day agricultural work, the farmers themselves. Illinois Stewardship Alliance, a state-wide non-profit organization which promotes local food and sustainable agriculture, created a speakers bureau of farmers that are ambassadors and educators for local food and sustainable agriculture. The Farmer Speaker Bureau consists of 16 farmers with expertise on a wide variety of topics ranging from the health effects of local food to the advantages of cover crops, and rare breed chickens to wholesale organic vegetable production.

“The farmers in our Bureau are doing really innovative things in sustainable farming,” says Molly Gleason, Illinois Stewardship Alliance Outreach Coordinator. “We hope the Speakers Bureau will generate more opportunities for these farmers to share their knowledge, and in turn, help more people to understand the importance of where their food comes from and how it’s grown.”

The list of Farmer Speaker Bureau members is now available, along with farmer profiles and contact information, on the Illinois Stewardship Alliance webpage at Farmer Speaker Bureau Profiles. Interested parties from conference organizers to members of the media looking for farm experts can simply scroll through the profiles until they find the speaker that best suits their needs. Additionally, a stipend request form for up to $500 is also available for organizations that need financial assistance to cover time and travel expenses incurred by farmers through speaking at an event.

Illinois Stewardship Alliance is a nonprofit organization that promotes environmentally sustainable, economically viable, socially just, local food systems through policy development, advocacy, and education.
