Even when we’re apart, we can act together

You may not feel like a hero stuck at home – but you are!
sheltering in place in the coming weeks will be what keeps the virus from spreading faster and overwhelming hospitals.

You’re not alone. The Alliance is a community of farmers and eaters like you who understand that our choices and our voices make a difference in our community.

Now, more than ever, your choice to buy local is an investment in yourself, your family, and in the people around you. You can use your voice in smart and strategic ways too. In fact, using your voice to advocate is one of the surest ways to support the things you love.

Even when we’re apart, we can act together.

Building resilient, healthy communities starts with using our choices and our voices together.

Use Your Choice

Right now, the Alliance is working – remotely – with ten leading food and farm organizations to produce the first ever statewide Buy Fresh Buy Local Illinois directory. Until then, use the resources below to find great local food.

Many farms and farm-to-table restaurants are now offering curbside pick-up or delivery. If you don’t see your favorite farm, market, or shop listed in the resources below, email Molly and we’ll share them widely.

Join a CSA

This is the perfect time to consider becoming a member of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. You buy a “share” in a local farm at the beginning of the season to help farmers cover the up-front cost of seeds and equipment, and get a “share” of the harvest on a set schedule throughout the season. You invest directly in farmers, and get a great box of healthy, minimally-handled local food at a drop-off site or delivery. Congress passed a $2 trillion coronavirus relief package last week. Thanks to the hard work from our friends at the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, local food producers and businesses are included in the $9.5 billion emergency funding aid package.

You can help. Join us in urging your member of Congress to make sure the US Department of Agriculture gets relief to farmers quickly who have lost direct markets.

We’ve made it easy for you to use your voice. Click here to contact your member of Congress today.

Your quick action will help keep the local food you love and the farmers and food businesses who get it to you in business.
