What will you give to the future?

“This holiday season, give something that will have a lasting impact on the world you wish to create.”

Sometimes I look out my window and wonder about the world my children are growing up in. What values are we instilling in them? What landscape are we leaving them with? When hard times come, as they surely do, will they have the wisdom and courage to make the right decisions? Will they act with love and compassion and understanding?

There are many things in this life beyond my control, and the current political divide, sluggish economy, and seemingly never-ending wars have never made that more clear to me than now.  Injustices and intolerance fly at us from airwaves and television signals and even in front of our very eyes.

I am far from having the answers, or even all of the questions. But what I can do, right now, is create change in myself and my community to help shape a future I want my children to inherit. It is people like you and I who have the real power to create change, and we exercise this power every day with the choices we make. Now, more than ever, it is time to use that power and choose to build our communities, to seek out in each other our common humanity, and to be examples of good stewards, acting with care and kindness towards each other and our shared earth.

For the past 10 years, I have been proud to work with a small, but mighty crew of 4 full-time staff members and 2 part-time staff. I have worked tirelessly and passionately along with them to help strengthen Illinois communities and reshape our food system. The work and accomplishments of our small team have been incredible. This year, against the odds, we passed legislation that protected the right to save and share seeds, expanded our local food programs into more rural communities, inspired even more farmers to practice conservation, and made fresh produce more affordable for vulnerable populations.

However,  these accomplishments, while wonderful, pale in comparison to the compassion the team brings to work every day. Compassion for the earth, our neighbors, and the world. We truly believe that the work we are doing here at Illinois Stewardship Alliance is good and honorable, and our staff lives out those beliefs in their work and in their lives. I could not be more proud of our team and the work we do.

This holiday season, you can give anything: gifts, money, vacations. But I hope you also choose to give something that will have a lasting impact on the world you wish to create.

Give Now

A donation to Illinois Stewardship Alliance is an investment in a movement to create stronger, healthier communities that are economically viable, socially just and environmentally sustainable.

Now is the time to come together and build the food and farm system we want to see. Together, we can build a future we can be proud of.
